Tumbleweeds

I read an interesting article describing how tumbleweeds (Russian Thistle, Salsola tragus) have been known to pile up in giant heaps around people’s homes in the arid west. They get extremely intertwined resulting in helpless homeowners being trapped inside with no way to exit. The blockade of tumbleweeds creates a thick wall of, as the author describes as “twisted balls of dead foliage.” Homeowners must wear special gloves and use tools to cut and carve their way out to freedom.
